The analysis did turn up some rather more odd correlations, for example, male CEOs in the US are more likely to have four letter names such as Jack, Bill or Fred.Similarly sales professionals are called shorter names like Chip or Todd while engineers and the names of people who work in restaurants are usually longer.

Study researcher Frank Nuessel, a professor of classical and modern languages at the University of Louisville, said of the findings to MSNBC: “Typically hypocorisms, the shorter form of a given name, are used in intimate situations as a nickname or a term of endearment.”

關鍵口語用字

1、If ……is anything to go by (something)：根據….判斷
這是一個實用的句型， "be anything to go by"，意思是「根據我們的經驗」、「根據作者的經驗」或「根據說話者的經驗」，其中go by原意為「根據…來判斷」。

Going by his accent, he is an American.（憑口音判斷，他是美國人。）
If past experience is anything to go by, they’ll be late.（根據過去的經驗，他們會遲到。）

既然有 anything to go by，也會有nothing to go by，例如：
China's official statistics are nothing to go by as they are totally unreliable.（中國官方的統計數字完全不可用於分析，因為根本不可靠。）

2、chances are...：很有可能
chances are that和文章裡的另一個句型it’s likely that意思接近，都是「很有可能」的意思。類似說法還有There is a chance that …／odds are that …。正式寫法會在chances前面加冠詞the。

The chances are that rates will continue to stay at 4.5％ for the coming few months.（接下來幾個月，利率很可能會維持在4.5％。）
