來台9年環島4次》一個老美：台灣學生很可憐，花很多時間念書考試，卻錯過人生體驗

我是一個住在台灣已經超過九年的美國人
I’m an American who’s been living in Taiwan for more than 9 years.

但不管我多愛台灣
But doesn’t matter how much I love Taiwan.

天下沒有不散的筵席
All good things must come to an end.

很多人透過書本來認識一個國家的文化
Many people start learning about some countries’ culture through textbooks.

但我透過旅行來認識台灣
But I got to know Taiwan through traveling.

在這九年來我環島了四次
I traveled around Taiwan for 4 times in 9 years.

也跑遍了台灣各個大小的城市
I have been to every city in this country.

A lot of people really would like to travel abroad, but because of money or time, don’t ever have the opportunity.
很多人都想出國，但可能因為金錢或時間的考量沒有辦法

But before you go and try to go to all these other countries.
但也許在你到別的國家之前

Why don’t you start with what’s closest to you, which is Taiwan, your home.
為什麼你不從最近的地方開始？台灣！你的家呀

In the past when traveling abroad, people would only have the opportunity to visit tourist attractions.
過往的旅行模式，大家通常都只會去著名景點觀光

But they would miss out on the most valuable part of travel,
但這樣也會錯過旅行最有價值的部份，

which is meeting the locals and experiencing the culture and discovering new places.
就是去認識當地人，跟著他們一起去體驗在地文化和探索新景點

But now with opportunities like backpacking, couchsurfing and hostels become more valuable.
但隨著近年來，背包旅行、沙發衝浪和青年旅館越來越普遍

It’s easy to have a more deep and rich experience while traveling.
可以藉由這些新方式去獲得更深層的體驗

I never would’ve discovered the scenery of Tatun mountain or the amazing river tracing in Wulai if I would’ve just stayed in Taipei City.
我如果都待在台北不出門，那我也不可能發現大屯山的美景和烏來的溯溪

I never would’ve discovered the beautiful mountains of Chihshang or the amazing beaches of Xincheng if I’d have just stayed & followed the same route.
如果我跟著一般觀光路線玩，我也不可能發現池上的好山好水或新城的美麗海灘

It’s like most people when they go to America, they just go to the same places that everybody else goes to. They go to LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas.
就像大部份的人去美國玩，通常都去洛杉磯、舊金山和賭城拉斯維加斯

But they miss out on all the great places that are in America, like in my hometown Utah, you can go horseback riding, camping, hiking, shooting guns, sking, snowboarding.
但這樣你就沒機會發現其他也很棒的地方！像我老家猶他州，你可以騎馬、露營、爬山、射擊、滑雪和滑板滑雪

Have you guys ever done these things?
大家有做過這些事嗎？

Sometimes I feel bad for Taiwanese students because they have to spend so much time in their textbooks and on tests.
有時候我覺得台灣學生很可憐，因為他們總是花很多時間在念書和考試

That they miss out on all of life experiences.
結果錯過了很多的人生體驗

They need to get out, they need to see the world and have new adventures.
他們需要離開去看見世界、挑戰自我

You know the world is not in your books; it’s out there waiting for you.
世界不侷限在書本裡，而是在外頭等著你去發現

The last 9 years, you guys have shown me the beauty of Taiwan.
