冠狀病毒（coronavirus）英文不難懂：corona（日冕）＋virus（病毒），因為它的外觀有凸狀物，會像日暈一樣向外發散。世界衛生組織正式定名為COVID-19：COrona＋VIrus＋Disease（疾病）與2019年。
