Sesquipedalian Spark of the Right

以文字見長的右派大師

美國保守派的思想大師巴克萊(William F. Buckley, Jr.)上月底(2月27日)突然病逝,次日《紐約時報》和《華盛頓郵報》均在頭版報導其死訊,《紐約時報》的大標題形容巴克萊是Sesquipedalian Spark of the Right,這也是本文的題目。

Sesquipedalian是長字(long words)之意,即多音節的字,和大字(big words)同屬罕見、不常用的字。Sesquipedalian Spark of the Right在這裡指巴克萊為文喜用長字,為其文章特色,無論他的文字、還是思想,都是光芒四射的(spark),因此被奉為右派的大師。這一點巴克萊和已故的蔣夫人宋美齡有點相像,蔣夫人為文或演講以使用大字(big words)聞名,當然她的意識形態也是極右和保守的。

《紐約時報》的訃聞(obituary)形容巴克萊文章的用字遣辭時說:Mr. Buckley's vocabulary, sparkling with phrases from distant eras and described in newspaper and magazine profiles as sesquipedalian(characterized by the use of long words), became the stuff of legend. Less kind commentators preferred "pleonastic"(using more words than necessary).(巴克萊的字彙,因用了些久遠時代的成語而生色,卻在報紙和雜誌的特寫中被形容為冗長,已成為傳奇的素材。較為不寬容的評論者則認為他的用字累贅而不必要。)
