Behemoth and Leviathan

「龐然」大物

Behemoth、leviathan是兩個不常見的英文字眼,作怪獸或水怪解,都是碩大無比的龐然巨物,均出自舊約(Old Testament)聖經約伯記 (Job)第四十和四十一章。聖經把behemoth譯為河馬(hippopotamus),也有的說behemoth是大象或恐龍;把leviathan譯為巨鯨(whale)或鱷魚 (crocodile/alligator)。它們究竟是甚麼,很難確定,總之是神話性的怪物。約伯記第四十章從十五節開始,對behemoth 有如下的描述:Look at the behemoth…His tail sways like a cedar;the sinews of his thighs are close-knit.His bones are tubes of bronze,his limbs like rods of iron.(你且觀看河馬……它搖動尾巴如香柏樹,它大腿的筋互相聯結。它的骨頭好像銅管,它的肢體彷彿鐵棍。)至於leviathan,約伯記的四十一章這樣形容:Can you pull the leviathan with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope?Any hope of subduing him is false,the mere sight of him is overpowering.(你能用魚鉤釣上鱷魚嗎?人指望捉拿它,是徒然的,一見它就喪膽了。)詩篇 (Psalms)第七十四篇也提到leviathan。
