「龐然」大物

Behemoth、leviathan是兩個不常見的英文字眼，作怪獸或水怪解，都是碩大無比的龐然巨物，均出自舊約（Old Testament）聖經約伯記 （Job）第四十和四十一章。聖經把behemoth譯為河馬（hippopotamus），也有的說behemoth是大象或恐龍；把leviathan譯為巨鯨（whale）或鱷魚 （crocodile／alligator）。它們究竟是甚麼，很難確定，總之是神話性的怪物。約伯記第四十章從十五節開始，對behemoth 有如下的描述：Look at the behemoth…His tail sways like a cedar;the sinews of his thighs are close-knit.His bones are tubes of bronze,his limbs like rods of iron.（你且觀看河馬……它搖動尾巴如香柏樹，它大腿的筋互相聯結。它的骨頭好像銅管，它的肢體彷彿鐵棍。）至於leviathan，約伯記的四十一章這樣形容：Can you pull the leviathan with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope?Any hope of subduing him is false,the mere sight of him is overpowering.（你能用魚鉤釣上鱷魚嗎？人指望捉拿它，是徒然的，一見它就喪膽了。）詩篇 （Psalms）第七十四篇也提到leviathan。

十七世紀英國政治學者霍布斯（Thomas Hobbes,1588-1679）著有Leviathan（音譯為《利維坦》）一書，於1651年出版，主張絕對的主權或君權，而這種權力大到可以像leviathan一樣的可怕，這是此書取名Leviathan的原因。

最近西方出版界有一件盛事，牛津大學出版社 （Oxford University Press）的《國家傳記辭典》（Dictionary of National Biography，簡稱DNB）問世了，這是《牛津大字典》的姊妹版。這部字典多達60冊，擺在書架上總長11呎，重達280磅，其巨大可以想見，故《紐約時報》的報導，就以 behemoth一字形容這部巨著，說是A Biographical Behemoth Is Ready to Bend Shelves.（龐大無比的傳記辭典連書架都要壓垮了。）
