Raise

raise 是及物動詞,根本上的意義是「使上升」,許多意思都是由此衍生喔。

舉起、抬起、升到高處

After that car accident, she couldn’t raise her arms above her shoulder anymore.(車禍過後,她再也無法將手臂舉過肩膀的高度。)

He raised his glass and said, “To health, Sam.”(他舉杯並說:「祝你健康,Sam。」)

建立、建造起

They raised a fence around their garden in case stray dogs destroy it.(他們在花園周圍建起圍籬,以防被流浪狗破壞。)

提出

None of them raised any objection.(沒有人提出反對意見。)
He raised some doubts about this theory.(他對這個理論提出一些質疑。)

增加數量、等級或力量

It is the fifth time the bank has raised interest rates since March.(這是這間銀行三月以來第五次調漲利率。)

It is urgent for this country to raise the quality of education.(提升教育品質對這個國家來說相當迫切。)

The landlord raised my rent.(房東提高了我的租金。)

養育;種植、飼養

Tammy was born and raised in Los Angeles.(Tammy 在洛杉磯出生長大。)

The Johnsons make a living by raising livestock and poultry.(Johnson 一家靠飼養家禽、家畜維生。)

招募、籌錢

They are going to raise funds for the school buildings.(他們即將為建造校舍而募資。)

引起、升高(某種意識)

和 arouse 相當接近。

The report about the new epidemic raised a great deal of public panic.(關於新型傳染病的報告在民眾間造成巨大的恐慌。)

※補充:raise當名詞時最常見的意思是「加薪」。

Mary wants a raise and some perks.(Mary 期望可以獲得加薪和工作津貼。)

rise

rise 是不及物動詞。

上升;上漲;增加

The sun rises in the east every day.(太陽每天從東邊升起。)

The population of the city has risen to seven million.(這個城市的人口已經上升到了七百萬。)

某種情緒高漲;提高音量或音調;變雀躍

Brian’s hope rose when he saw a rescue team coming.(當 Brian 看見搜救隊來到,他又燃起了希望。)

My voice rose because of anger.(我的音調因為憤怒而提高。)

His mood instantly rose at the sound of Jessi’s voice.(聽到 Jessi 的聲音,他的心情立刻變好。)

在社會或職業地位上提升

This politician rose to fame very quickly because of his shocking statements.(這個政治人物因為他驚人的言論,很快聲名大噪。)

起身(包含起床、起立等)

She rose from the chair and walked into the dining room.(她從椅子上起身並走進飯廳。)

I rose early this morning.(我今天起的很早。)

rise above 克服、不被侷限於

Phillips believes that he can rise above poverty through education.(Phillips 相信他可以靠教育戰勝貧窮。)

rise (up) against 起來反抗

They plan to rise up and overthrow the government.(他們計畫要起義並推翻政府。)

The villagers rose against the aggressors.(村民挺身對抗入侵者。)

give rise to 引起

和 lead to 同義。

The food shortage gave rise to the severe famine.(食物短缺造成了嚴重饑荒。)

arise

arise 同樣為不及物動詞。注意 arise 沒有上升的意思,掌握這點就可以破解很多難題囉!

發生;產生;出現

Unexpected difficulties arose in the course of their experiment.(他們實驗過程中出現了意想不到的困難。)

Serious disagreements arose between the co-workers.(同事之間的意見產生了嚴重的分歧。)

The sport arose in the 19th century.(這項運動在十九世紀時開始出現。)

arise from N. 起因於

Her illness arose from malnutrition.(她的疾病起因於營養不良。)

Many accidents arise from the carelessness.(許多事故都是粗心造成的。)

arouse

arouse 則是及物動詞,意思是「喚起」(意識、感覺等),另外也有「激起情緒」的意思。

The man’s appearance aroused the guard’s suspicions.(那個男人的外表引起了警衛的懷疑。)

Trump has an ability to influence the audience and to arouse the masses.(Trump 能夠影響聽眾並激起人群情緒。)
